Nessuno capisce il motivo per cui alcune api costruiscono degli alveari a spirale

Tetragonula carbonaria: è questo il nome della api australiane che si distinguono da tutte le altre specie di api grazie alla creazione di alveari spettacolari, a spirale, che non hanno niente a che fare con le scatole senza carattere che le altre api costruiscono per viverci. Come se fossero architetti o amanti del design, queste api, conosciute come «sugarbag», hanno creato questi alveari inusuali, a spirale, appunto, con un singolo strato, un solo ingresso e un rivestimento fatto di uno strato appiccicoso che aiuta a intrappolare gli agenti patogeni, per impedire loro di entrare nell’alveare. Le «sugarbag», infatti, hanno bisogno di una difesa, dal momento che non hanno un pungiglione e quindi non pungono – mordono soltanto.

Gli scienziati non riescono a capire per quale motivo queste api costruiscano arnie a spirale (una possibile passione per l’architettura innovativa non è una giustificazione credibile purtroppo): potrebbe trattarsi di una costruzione che migliora il loro movimento, per esempio, o la circolazione dell’aria – che negli attuali favi non è molto funzionale.
Qualunque sia la ragione, i ricercatori si dicono convinti a volerla rintracciare.

Intanto, c’è un sito – e una pagina Facebook, anche –, in cui si possono cercare le informazioni su queste api; è gestito dall’entomologo ed ex ricercatore del CSIRO, Tim Heard, che si è occupato dello studio della Tetragonula carbonaria per oltre 3 decenni, e ha l’intenzione di educare le persone all’amore per questi incredibili insetti, raccontandoli come meglio può. «Le api senza pungiglione», dice sul sito: «sono insetti altamente sociali, con una regina e migliaia di lavoratori che vivono insieme in un luogo protetto, che, in natura, è di solito in un albero cavo».
Quello che possiamo aggiungere è che costruiscono degli alveari davvero bellissimi.
